Case study / Real-world build
From annual accountancy hurdles to a 30-minute micro-filing pack.
For four years, our accountant prepared the year-end micro accounts for Bury Basketball Alliance CIC for £200. When software price rises pushed fees upwards, even a modest increase was money our grassroots club needed elsewhere.
The problem
Many accountants charge far more than we paid. For small CICs run by volunteers, year-end accounts can feel costly, technical and stressful — a recurring hurdle that takes time and money away from the community.
The build
I set out to understand how micro-entity accounts work, then built a supportive tool that turns income and expenditure into a CIC micro-accounts filing pack. It was designed to be legal, above board and to give peace of mind.
How it works — timed at under 30 minutes
- 01
Download
Export the year’s bank transactions as CSV files.
- 02
Categorise
Guided prompts sort income and expenditure into the right headings.
- 03
Review
Plain-English checks highlight anything that needs a second look.
- 04
Generate
A complete micro-entity filing pack, ready to review and submit.
From downloading the CSV files to seeing the final filing pack: under 30 minutes, timed on our own accounts.
The opportunity
Helping other CICs save money, time and stress.
The tool is working and private while it is refined. I’m looking for investors and partners to help fine-tune it into a viable product for the wider social enterprise sector.
- Refine the guidance and checks with input from accountancy professionals
- Test with a wider group of CICs and small community organisations
- Shape pricing, onboarding and support into a viable product
The tool supports preparation; it does not replace professional advice where your circumstances require it.
